The city mixes its small-town qualities (mature neighborhoods and established retail and service areas) with the new housing being developed throughout Oakdale. School District 622 was a pioneer in requiring minimum competency levels in arithmetic, reading and writing prior to the passage of the Assurance of Mastery Law. A major influence in the community is 3M, whose international headquarters is in nearby Maplewood. Oakdale Crossing Business Park and Granada Business Park offer industrial office space.
